Recently some of The Nethernet Stewards teamed up with the NPCs and other assorted Nethernet gods to update the inventory of the Real-life Nethernet Shoppe.

If you’ve yet to check out The Nethernet on Zazzle, it’s worth a look, especially now! There are over 60 items available some of which were custom made for specific TNN players.

sylverling created a custom “Watchdog-Destroyer V-Neck T-Shirt” for Riko. When asked about her future shirt Riko exclaimed, “I was very excited when sylverling offered to design the shirt to order. I have repeatedly said that the watchdog buggering…er…biting the Destroyer is the BEST ARTWORK EVER! Now I have the opportunity to share it with a broader audience. As I had selected the woman’s sheer v-neck T-shirt, I decided the artwork should be placed on the back, to avoid distortion. I think the shirt will provide an opening for many interesting conversations about the Nethernet, watchdogs, and the actual place and role of Destroyers within the game.”

A few of the newly available items in TNN RL Shoppe!

According to Elder Steward salmontickler, “The Shoppe needed some attention; we added some great new summer lines!” Of the new items he said his favorite “is the Nethernet 500 error, with the shoat legging it from the explosion. I made this and ordered it myself.”

Shoat Patrol Lead Steward sylverling said, “I love the puzzle crate tank - so fun and flirty! - and the Good Watchdog shirt. Cute and fun. I also like the Happy Destroyer stickers and will be ordering a bunch to plaster all over my hometown. Viral marketing ftw!”

Elder Steward chetyre believes some of the new items are going to be a big hit: “I think the tool stickers are going to sell well. I also think that the tool use badge buttons will be a big hit. I remember since the start of the game, people have asked for real badges–plus they look snazzy!”

Each of the Stewards mentioned above have indicated they’re more than willing to create custom product for interested buyers. More information and requests can be posted in this thread. Enjoy and thanks Stewards!

Dear Nethernetters,

In light of recent events in #keeper.com, I realized that Order needs to morale raising. So here it is, coming to you straight from inside the Nethernet network. Did you think only people -like Victoria Ash- were capable of hacking into the Nethernet? Think again. I am here to represent Order and to put my Order brothers and sisters back in line. Such timing with all the drama happening inside the Chaos carnival. This is the perfect time to strike and take Chaos down.

To help Order complete this task, I (with the help of hollowleviathan) have jiggled loose a few things inside the Nethernet network. Starting 06/25/2009 there will be a few changes in the game.

First off, I have altered the amount of DP you earn per TLD. As long as you have your armor on, you will now earn 8DP per TLD. If you so choose to keep your armor off, then you can continue to only earn 3DP per TLD.

Second, Pathmakers, the pings you earn when someone completes your Mission has now been more than doubled. You will earn 25 pings per player that completes your Mission. This might be the time you want to revamp your older Missions and put them back in the spotlight.

Third, Benefactors, I have removed the cost of pings to stash Puzzle, Stealth, and Evercrates. Now you can lay them freely without the restriction of how many pings you have saved up. However, pesky Destroyers, I left the cost of Trapped as is. If you want to hide mines in a crate, you can continue to waste up your pings doing so.

Fourth, but never the least, Bedouins, time to stock up on your armor. I have changed the cost of armor in the Shoppe from 25DP to 10DP each. Since you will be earning more DP per TLD, I suggest also stocking up on armor to last you till 2010.

I don’t have much time. If I get caught in here, the Trustees might reverse my changes. I can’t promise these changes will stay for long. They will remain until the Trustees can break the encryption I put on the network to keep them out. Take advantage of what you can Order. This should help us get back on top of Chaos. GO ORDER!

-Your Friendly Neighborhood Bedouin

The Nethernet is endowed with a community who believes in democracy. Throughout the game’s history there have been two elections held for head of the player-run government. sylverling, PMOG President for Life, called for the election of a Prime Minister of The Nethernet.

The winner of that contest was bunni3burn, a long-time veteran of the game and Queen of the Bedouins. Bunni3, as she is known by most (notoriousB by others), has graciously run our LiveJournal and Last.FM communities.

The following is a short interview with her regarding her tenure as Nethernet Prime Minister.

How satisfying was it to be elected PM of TNN?

It was pretty satisfying, since my tragic loss by 3 votes in the PMOG President Elections. With the dawning of a new name, you have to elect a person who can represent it well. It’s good to know that my fellow Nethernetters think highly enough of me to have voted me into this position. Makes a person re-think their place in a game. You always feel like the little guy/gal, until something makes you realize that you are bigger than you originally thought. Even more satisfying has to be that I am an Order supporter, and led an Order campaign. A Chaos heavy community still voted me as the Prime Minister.

How has it changed your experience of the game?

I get a lot more fan mail, I mean Pmails. Besides that, honestly, nothing much has changed. The Nethernet is pretty Chaos-sided, you can’t easily control Chaos. I still spend my days polishing my Armor and budgeting my DeePees for donating to forum games and crating the internet. My nights are still filled with seeking out the Mines, and dodging Ballistic Nicks.

What campaign promises have you kept?

I have fully stood by my Order values, even publishing a Bedouin mission that was chosen to be in the Nethernet Guide. I have not been bribed, or blackmailed into the side of Chaos. I have hosted events to keep the community busy and having fun. I recently revamped the Nethernet LiveJournal and last.fm pages, to continue to give the players a place to gather outside of the Nethernet. I also extended my free time to Zous’ to help give pmog.zousware.com a new logo and design. I have been working on a few sides projects, still yet to come. *wink*

What ones have you broken? Some players have been asking about Social Security, for example.

The Social Security was a great idea brought up by Geb, during the PMOG President Elections. I would love to see the idea blossom, and I would fully support it. I feel responsible that there are not as many community events happening, as there could be. This is something listed in the side projects to better improve my dedication to being the Prime Minister.

Do you have any comments for your critics?

Many Chaos players were worried that I would use my power to completely abolish Chaos. Those players, I hope, have changed their opinions about me. I am not so bad after all, am I?

For your supporters?

First, thank you to supporting me. I would be a nobody without you. I hope that I have lived up to your expectations, I hope that you do not regret your vote. And I hope to continue to make you proud to say Bunni3burn is your Prime Minister!

What would you say to any TNN player interested in TNN politics?

It’s a dirty game out there. It’s probably a bit easier if you are not aligned with Order. Regardless, players will turn their back on you in an instant. You really learn who your allies are in the game of the Nethernet Politics. If you intend on getting involved with the politics on the Nethernet, make sure you wear your Armor thick, be on high alert, and be willing to shed a few tears of joy and pain.

Any closing thoughts?

Being elected as the Prime Minister has brought me many obstacles to overcome and many weeps of joy. I have many plans in store for the Nethernet. I look forward to improving the community in all the ways possible. I hope you stick around to see them, and invite all your friends to join in all the fun to be had!

This interview is brought to you by Professor Esper and funded by Victoria Ash. Please send all donations to The Keepers, c/o paulcasals. This is bunni3burn and I approve this interview.

[Until Friday, 19 June 2009, only 1 St. Nick can be attached to any player at a time; the cap for Grenades has also been raised to 10. Watch the forums for NPCs offering discounts on tools!]

From Victoria Ash in response to actions taken by the Verdant Casque:

In order to bring my plan to fruition and restore the name of Vigilante in The Nethernet, I have persuaded my winged friends to obey me - and only me. They will not attach so readily under anyone else’s control. Only one St. Nick will attach to a player at once!

My latest system hack is also a success; I have increased the number of grenades that will target a player at one time, temporarily raising the limit to 10. Chaos shall rule once again.”

Transcript of #destroyers on irc.thenethernet.com

#destroyers: The topic for #destroyers is: In memory of JC & Celes, naded… | joe be with you

victoria_ash: Tuesday! I have been looking for you.

victoria_ash: Your assistance is required.

bloody_tuesday: I’m always at ya beck an’ call m’lady.

victoria_ash: The Verdant Casque has become a problem.

victoria_ash: I require your destructive skills in keeping them in check.

victoria_ash: They must be taught a lesson.

victoria_ash: They have become too…orderly.

victoria_ash: The very word makes me shiver in disgust.

victoria_ash: They are holding…elections.

bloody_tuesday: Elections? They’re your pets. Ya can’t keep ‘em under control?

victoria_ash: I have become merely a pawn to them. A figurehead! My disdain over the past few weeks has accomplished nothing.

victoria_ash: Order runs rampant.

victoria_ash: Like a virus. An infection.

bloody_tuesday: Ya hired me t’ blow up th’ big names. Ya really want t’ waste my skills on these… Insects?

victoria_ash: I do. They are destroying the name of Vigilante!

victoria_ash: And they are claiming that I *approve* this disgusting behavior

bloody_tuesday: Send ‘em a few o’ ya electric nicks, and ship me t’ do somethin’ useful. It’s been a long time since ya sent me out t’ do somethin’ worth my time…

bloody_tuesday: Whippin’ ya pets for ya is just insultin’ me talents.

victoria_ash: And now you’re insulting me.

victoria_ash: Do not forget who it is who allows you free reign with your destructive tools!

victoria_ash: If not for me turning a blind eye, you would be blocked at every turn

victoria_ash: It is fortunate indeed for you that my vengeance and your destruction often meet the same goals.

victoria_ash: Your assistance is REQUIRED.

bloody_tuesday: I’ve burned through nicks b’fore. I admit though. Life is easier wit’ ya on my side.

victoria_ash: Besides, I indeed have something you want.

victoria_ash: There is a figure underneath the mask, do not forget.

bloody_tuesday: Ah… There is that.

bloody_tuesday: Th’ Casque. Kids wit’ kids toys. Ya really plannin’ on sendin’ me t’ do somethin’ about them?

victoria_ash: Tuesday, my faithful, my loyal, my friend, would I have asked if I did not mean it?

bloody_tuesday: I object strongly t’ this assignment. Ya are however th’ boss. What would ya have me do?

victoria_ash: Well, well. Your assistance is…appreciated. And you will be rewarded.

victoria_ash: But first, I think, you’ll be punished for questioning me.

victoria_ash: I want YOU to take charge of the Ballistic St. Nicks.

victoria_ash: I, meanwhile, will handle Grenades, the way you like.

bloody_tuesday: Ya want me t’ use those filthy bugs?

victoria_ash: Oh, you will, and you will enjoy each tiny shock they give you as you set them on their targets.

bloody_tuesday: Again. Mistress. Ya are th’ boss.

victoria_ash: I am indeed.

victoria_ash: Do not forget it.

victoria_ash: Their shocks will imprint it on your memory, i hope, if your naked parades through minefields have not addled your brains too much.

bloody_tuesday: When would ya wish for my… Punishment t’ take place?

victoria_ash: Tomorrow, I think. As I said, I will be handling the grenading of the Casque. My punishment to them. You will shock off what armor they wear - filthy Bedouin stuff, it is - and damage those that are wise enough not to wear it. I will pour destruction on their naked flesh.

victoria_ash: They will cry, Victoria, save us!

victoria_ash: And I will reply…no.

victoria_ash: Tomorrow is best. I intend to hack the system again this evening. I will need some time; it is an arduous process.

victoria_ash: But I will not reveal all of my plan. Not yet.

bloody_tuesday: As disgusted as I am at havin’ to use those foul bugs, I admit th’ plan is quite interestin’.

victoria_ash: They are my pets. Much as you are.

bloody_tuesday: So. Tomorrow th’ Casque faces our combin’d wrath? So be it.

victoria_ash: They do. And anyone else who gets in our way.

victoria_ash: We will reign triumphant once again!

victoria_ash: Ah, destroyers! Fling your grenades most chaotically. You will find it easier than usual.

bloody_tuesday: I’ll not forget th’ “lesson” you have set for me M’lady. Until tomorrow.

bloody_tuesday left the room (Let th’ grenades fly.).

victoria_ash: On that note, I must leave you. Farewell. Enjoy the Chaos tomorrow.

Just about a year ago, The Tubenauts released their first unofficial PMOG Podcast. Since then, 13 sporadic episodes have followed, each covering various releases, community happenings and game events, all while chronicling the progressive nature of both the game itself and its community. Hosted by tonedef, snocrsh, pixielo, chetyre and a varying cast of commentators, The Tubenauts have provided hours of entertainment for The Nethernet community, as well as critical feedback for the GameLayers. Always honest, but ever constructive, I have taken careful notes from each of the podcasts in hopes of improving our product and communicating the feedback and feelings represented by our player base.

If you have yet to listen to one of The Tubenauts episodes, head over to their home on Zousware and subscribe on iTunes. Then, once you’re hooked, I’d encourage you to go back and listen to all of the episodes for a complete picture of the metamorphosis I described earlier.

In Episode 13: Dog Market, Shoat Market, The Tubenauts opened up their podcast for player-submitted audio. So, if you have something that “Nicks your Mines” or a gameplay aspect you’d like the world to hear about, record your piece and e-mail it to tubenauts at gmail dot com.

You can also follow the gang on Twitter.

A huge thanks to all members of the cast, especially tonedef, for keeping the podcast alive for over a year now. As they transition to welcome new commentators into their fold, stay tuned for continued excellence and hilarity in podcasting.

-Joe

A new war is upon us…

Mission of the Week:

So many children around the world are being daily abused, and as the children grow older they bring with them their dark memories and their deep pain throughout their lives, and if they’re not given any help and support they risk continuing the vicious circle themselves and sow new seeds of hatred and abuse. One thing we all should understand, is that children never forget their demons in the first place. I say that we all help in making the world a slightly better place for us all to live in, so please let me take a moment of your time and let me guide you through some websites containing important and useful information and resources.”

Veteran players of The Nethernet likely know the player who I have I dubbed as the “PMOG (TNN) Tycoon.” He is responsible for many of the ventures surrounding The Nethernet, including: The Tubenauts, a player-run Podcast; The PMOG Lottery; Goldensneaker Casino; the late PRisk; Auto-DP Generator v6.5; and a number of others. This player among players is the only and only Zous! All of his works can be found on his website Zousware.

I recently virtually sat down with Zous and asked him a few questions to look into what drives him to continue his community-strengthening ventures.

The Masked Zous himself

When asked about what has driven him to dedicate so much of his time to these side projects Zous said, “The [Nethernet] is about the community to me.”

“As I am a Software Engineer by profession anyways, I’m always excited by the prospect of building something new assuming I have the time to do so. Being able to provide it to a community like this though, who I know will use it and hopefully enjoy it, makes it even more worthwhile. In general, anything I can do to better provide for the community and help it grow is both exciting and fun to me.”

It hasn’t always been easy or perfect though. During PRisk a number of issues sprung up, including PMOG’s transition from a JavaScript-injected overlay system, to the new XUL-based toolbar. More recently, some holes were present in the Goldenseaker Casino, which resulted in the need of stimulus funds from Thomas Hoggins to get it back on its feet. Despite these and other caveats Zous has yet to be deterred.

“It’s part learning new things as I build them (as I rarely try to stick to only what I know) and the knowledge hopefully they’ll make things more engaging for others that I enjoy most. The only times which I have not enjoyed it is when someone tries to break the system actively out of pure greed and even more so when I realize how much I want to do that I don’t have the time to handle,” he said.

Zous, and myself, welcome anyone who wants to provide a better, more engaging atmosphere for our little piece of the Internet. If you’re interested in learning more about developing side projects for The Nethernet and other games alike, join #pmods on irc.freenode.com.
